Nordic inspiration – Fresh approaches in museum education

A collaboration between several Nordic museum education associations, the publication presents 25 projects in museum pedagogy. They are examples of the diverse pedagogical work done in museums and other cultural institutions in the Nordic countries. The publication was made in collaboration with FISOS (Island), FUISM (Sweden), MiD (Denmark), and SFF (Norway). Together with Pedaali, these associations form the network NAME (Nordic Associations for Museum Education) which aims to promote the social status of museum pedagogy and the collaboration between the Nordic countries. The articles are published both in English and in the national language of each country.

Nuoret ja kulttuurinen osallisuus

Museums, theatres and youth centres alike want to offer cultural experiences for young people. The young are in demand as a target group, but is their own voice heard? It seems that the young are often offered activities, but hardly ever given a chance to take part in organising it. This publication is written to encourage discussion about the need for engaging young people. The case studies examine the aims and effects of young people’s cultural participation, not only for the young themselves, but also for the cultural institutions and the general audience.

Opastamisen nykypäivää

The publication is based on the seminar The Past and Present of Guided Tours, organised by Pedaali in May 2008, and on a study the association conducted on tour guides’ job descriptions and employment contracts. Together, the material collected from the seminar and the study form a picture of the realities of present-day guided tours. It also includes examples of various new forms of museum guiding.

History of guidning

Pedafooni 2B, 2010 in english
The publication surveys the history of guided tours in art museums, cultural history museums, and natural history museums. Who have the guides been? Who the audience? What has the subject matter included? How have the tours been carried out? The publication examines the relationship between guided tours and the museum’s other functions, such as education, public engagement, research, and the organisation of exhibitions, all of which vary across different types of museums. History of guiding is available both in Finnish and English.

It’s all Mediating. Conference report

Pedafooni 3, 2013

The publication is based on the international seminar It’s All Mediating, organised in May 2012. It concentrates on the problematic relationship between two basic functions of a museum: exhibitions and public engagement. The seminar concentrated on questions about how the aims of museum curators and public engagement professionals both agree and disagree, how they distribute their work, what their core values are, and how collaboration between the two professions can be improved. The seminar was organised together with The Finnish Society for Curators, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Finnish Museums Association, and Aalto University’s Master’s Programme in Curating, Managing and Mediating Art (CuMMA), with support from The Finnish Museum of Photography, Helsinki Art Museum, Pori Art Museum, and Rauma Art Museum.

New approaches NOW – from museum education to audience engagement

The publication reflects on public engagement work in museums in the 2010’s. It is a collection of articles presenting different solutions for rethinking the role of museums in society and giving new ideas for developing the functions of museums. The association organised an international seminar on the same subject in May 2015 in Helsinki. The articles discuss various themes that encourage the reader to consider to whom museums belong and for whom museum work is done.  They redefine the border between a museum professional and a museum visitor. As is common in the museum field, they emphasize the wider social role and responsibility museums have alongside their work in cultural heritage preservation. The publication includes a section for case studies which present prime examples of arranging museum work and functions in the Finnish museum field over the years. All cases have received the association’s Annual Award in Museum Pedagogy during 2006–2015. The publication is in English.
